Science-Based Approaches to Mental Health Care
Introduction to a New Brain “Radar” System: Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS)
Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) is a sophisticated, non-invasive brain imaging technology that captures both spatial and temporal brain activity with high precision.
Often described as an “oximeter for the brain,” fNIRS utilizes infrared light, typically through 48 channels, to penetrate the cerebral cortex, especially targeting areas like the frontal lobe. It measures fluctuations in oxygenated (HbO2) and deoxygenated hemoglobin (Hb) levels, indicators of neuronal activity and metabolic processes. This allows for the real-time monitoring of brain regions that are active (channels open) or at rest (channels closed).
Although fNIRS technology has been utilized in other clinical settings, such as ICU monitoring, it is considered a non-diagnostic wellness instrument for mental health testing and is not yet approved by the FDA. Consequently, it is not covered by medical insurance. Despite this, our clinic has arranged a special offer from the testing lab that provides this service at a very affordable price, making it accessible to those who might benefit from it.
The insights gained from fNIRS are instrumental in refining treatments such as pharmacological interventions or Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), enhancing therapeutic outcomes by targeting specific brain areas.
