Life is full of ups and downs with free tickets to ride all of the emotional rollercoasters. Sometimes we feel incredible, but sometimes not. It’s a common (and recommended) thing for people to question their “down days”, because it’s important to understand what we’re feeling. Analyzing your feelings is crucial for being aware so you can know if you have depression and need to seek professional help.

If you’re feeling sad, then that’s okay. Embrace how you feel and you’ll eventually find the strength to feel better with time. But depression is not like sadness, and should not be painted with the same brush.

Here are some questions to ask yourself to know if you have depression:

  1. Are you feeling hopeless or useless?
  2. Are you losing interest in life?
  3. Are you sleeping more than normal?
  4. Are you struggling to sleep?
  5. Do your energy levels feel depleted?
  6. Is your appetite irregular?
  7. Do you have less concentration than you used to?
  8. Have you had any thoughts of self-harm or dying?

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, this may give you a head start on figuring out whether you’re depressed or not. But don’t do it alone. If you feel like you need to explore these outcomes, consider speaking to a mental health professional.

Things like fatigue or loss of appetite can be ruled out with the correct diagnosis because they can be caused by other underlying health factors, so it’s important to steer clear of self-diagnosis.

These questions are simply here to help you reflect; and if you feel like you may have depression, contact a mental health professional. They’ll help you work your way through it, because depression is a treatable condition.

So don’t lose hope. You’ve got this.
